It is never too early to teach correct alignment when pointing the feet. When it comes to teaching students how to “point”, we should first teach that pointing involves more than just the toes. We need to stretch through the entire foot beginning with the ankle. Feel the stretch in your arch and reach with the toes. One of the most common problems with alignment in young dancers is ‘sickling’ the foot. (see photo below) It is so important to correct this fault as early as possible. This can be achieved through hands on corrections and exercises and imagery designed to give the dancer an understanding and execution of a correct neutral alignment of the foot.
